About
Our Program
I
am so excited to be
here
at Elliston-Lafayette this year as the library media
specialist.
I
am a graduate of UVA and love to
don my blue and orange among the sea of maroon. It has been
quite fun being a Wahoo among all these Hokies. This is my first year
back to teaching
after an eight year leave to raise children and help my
husband
run our real estate and building business. I was a
media
specialist for two years following a career of teaching 4th
and
5th graders for 7 years in Norfolk, VA which is also where I grew up.
As a classroom teacher I caught the technology bug
and
enjoyed learning about new technologies and how I could use them in my
classroom. I also have a huge love of children's literature
and
aspire to writing and publishing my own children's book one day.
These two loves led me to become a library media specialist.
Helping kids become effective users of information and
creating
lifelong learners who have a love of reading is very
fulfilling.
On the personal side, I have been married to my husband for
ten
years and we have two beautiful little girls, Rachel, age 7
and and Lauren age 4. We love to travel,
especially to the
beach. Other interests include hiking and exploring,
biking
and running, and gardening and cooking. . . . and of course we all love
to read.
The
mission of the
Elliston-Lafayette Elementary Library is to
prepare students for life-long learning through encouraging and
promoting
effective use of ideas and information and cultivating a love of
reading. The library program plays a critical role in
our students educational program through providing instructional
activities,
resources, facilities and technologies for students and staff to become
more
effective and efficient users of information.
The
library media specialist works collaboratively with classroom teachers
to
develop lessons that incorporate information literacy skills with the
Virginia
Academic Standards. Our lessons and projects help prepare
students for the 21st Century by helping them become informed decision
makers
and effective and discriminating users of information and technology.

Schedule
Elliston-Lafayette
Library
Media Center operates on a flex and fixed schedule, a combination of
open access
and
scheduled classes.
All classes have a scheduled
30 minute library time during which
they learn how to use the library and its resources as well as develop
a joy of literature through read alouds, book talks, author studies,
etc. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-12:30,
students
may come to
the library media center at any time - individually, in small groups,
or with
their entire class - to check out and return materials, to
read for pleasure or
information, to hear stories, or research topics for reports, using a
variety
of resources. Teachers may also schedule their class or small groups
for
additional instruction at any time.
